Team India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, recently found himself in the spotlight for a concerning reason after it emerged that he had received two threatening emails. Initial reports hinted at a possible link to terror outfits like ISIS, raising alarm bells. However, investigations took a dramatic turn when a 21-year-old engineering student from Gujarat, Jigneshsinh Parmar, was identified and taken into custody by authorities.

The Central District Police detained Parmar on Friday. Following his arrest, his family claimed that he has been battling mental health issues. The Delhi Police disclosed that the threatening emails were traced to a suspicious source, and notably, they were sent on the same day as the tragic Pahalgam massacre in Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people lost their lives.

The two emails sent to Gambhir’s address carried a chilling message — just three words: “I kill you.” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), M Harsha Vardhan, confirmed the developments, stating, “Parmar is an engineering student. His family claims he suffers from mental health problems. Further investigations are underway. We have been informed about the alleged threat mail received by Gautam Gambhir. The matter is being investigated thoroughly.”

Vardhan further mentioned that Gautam Gambhir, already under Delhi Police protection, continues to receive all necessary security measures, though specific details were not disclosed for confidentiality reasons.
The formal complaint regarding the death threat was lodged at Rajinder Nagar Police Station. Alarmingly, this isn’t the first time Gambhir has faced such threats. A similar scare occurred in 2022, after which his security detail was significantly strengthened.
The written complaint to the police read, “Dear Sir, Namaskar. As we spoke, please find below the ‘Threat Mails’ received on the mail ID of Mr Gautam Gambhir (Ex-MP), Head Coach, Indian Cricket Team. Kindly register the FIR accordingly and ensure the safety and security of the family.”

Despite the disturbing events off the field, Gautam Gambhir’s cricketing journey continues to inspire. A two-time World Cup winner, he was instrumental in India’s triumphs at the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa and the 2011 ODI World Cup at home. His tactical acumen earned him the head coach role for Team India in 2024, and earlier this year, he guided Rohit Sharma’s men to the Champions Trophy title in Dubai.
Gambhir’s resilience, both on and off the field, remains a defining aspect of his legacy.
