Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir shut down critics of the team’s recent T20I struggles ahead of the 2026 Asian Games. The Indian team suffered back-to-back embarrassing T20I series losses to Ireland and England, soon after winning the 2026 T20 World Cup as well. However, Team India had not lost a T20I series under Gambhir before the 0-2 series loss in
Ireland as well.

Talking about the back-to-back T20I series losses, Gambhir said on Jio Star (via NDTV): “For two years, imagine, we won the World Cup. Which team in the history of sport has gone undefeated from one World Cup to the next and gone on to win the World Cup? It didn’t take these guys 17 years to win a second World Cup. It took them only 17 months to win a third World Cup. Suddenly, one bad series or three bad games here and there do not make them bad players or make us a bad side.”

Gautam Gambhir said that his tenure as Team India head coach has been a mixed bag ahead of the 2026 Asian Games. he, however, took over as India’s head coach after the 2024 T20 World Cup, replacing Rahul Dravid. Under Gambhir, Team India have won two ICC titles, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup. However, they have struggled in Tests, suffering two home series whitewashes to New Zealand and South Africa as well.

“I think I’ve had my own share of ups and downs, I think I’ve had my own failures and success. But again, I’ve always believed that when you take up that kind of responsibility, there will always be ups and downs,” said Gambhir (via India Today).
