Geeta Basra was just 21 when she made her Bollywood debut in Aditya Datt’s Dil Diya Hai (2006). The following year, she appeared alongside Emraan Hashmi in The Train, cementing her presence in the industry. But around the same time, fate introduced her to Harbhajan Singh, India’s ace spinner, who had already made up his mind that she was “the one.”

Recalling their first connection in a chat with Bharti TV, Geeta Basra shared, “He saw my poster, and it was probably love at first sight for him. He asked Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) for my number. Obviously, Yuvi has a lot of friends.” Harbhajan reached out soon after, but Geeta initially didn’t respond. It was only after India’s World Cup victory that she sent him a congratulatory message, which eventually led to their first meeting. “When we met, he was very clear. He said, ‘Tere se hi shaadi karunga.’ I was shocked. I was only 21.”
For Geeta, the timing wasn’t ideal. She was focused on her acting career and feared the consequences of being linked with a cricketer.

“Fifteen years ago, things were different. Even if you were spotted with someone, your career was over. I lost four films because of the news that I was getting married,” she revealed.
Despite her doubts, Geeta slowly began to see Harbhajan’s sincerity. After nearly ten months, she finally said yes—but not without setting a condition.

“I told him the day you take 300 wickets, I’ll say yes. A couple of days later, he did it. That’s when I thought, let’s give it a shot.” What truly convinced her were her friends’ words about Harbhajan’s humility. “He’s a star, but doesn’t carry that attitude. He’s very grounded, and being Punjabi like me also mattered.”

The couple eventually tied the knot in 2015. Geeta admitted it wasn’t an easy decision at first, as she had concerns about cultural differences and loyalty. But Harbhajan proved her wrong every step of the way. “Sometimes, you just need to know if you can spend the rest of your life with someone. He’s loyal, humble, and a very family-oriented person.”
Today, Geeta Basra and Harbhajan Singh are proud parents to daughter Hinaya (born 2016) and son Jovan (born 2021). While Geeta has stayed away from films since 2016, Harbhajan retired from international cricket. Laughing about family life, she said, “He loves kids, I do too, but it’s not easy. Pregnancy and post-pregnancy bring their own challenges.”
