In a high-pressure IPL 2025 Eliminator clash at the new PCA Stadium in Mullanpur, Gujarat Titans let two golden opportunities slip as Mumbai Indians opener Rohit Sharma was handed not one, but two lives in quick succession. First, Gerald Coetzee failed to latch onto a top-edge catch at deep fine leg off Rohit’s mistimed pull—an early reprieve in just the second over of the innings.

Only five balls later, things got worse for GT. Kusal Mendis, filling in as wicketkeeper, fluffed a straightforward chance behind the stumps after Rohit got a thick outside edge while attempting an ambitious swing. Mohammed Siraj, the bowler, was visibly frustrated, as it was a regulation catch that could have shifted the momentum in Gujarat’s favour.

Earlier in the second over, Jonny Bairstow opened Mumbai’s boundary count with a stylish lofted square drive, adding a couple of twos to keep the scoreboard ticking. Rohit, after his first reprieve, capitalised immediately in the third over, hitting two back-to-back boundaries—one a punch through covers and the other lofted over mid-on.

Both teams came into this must-win fixture on the back of disappointing defeats. Punjab Kings dashed MI’s hopes of a top-two finish in Jaipur, while bottom-placed Chennai Super Kings outclassed Gujarat Titans in their last league encounter.
