During the ODI series against the hosts England in last June, Maxwell received the shoulder injury. Despite the injury, Maxwell participated in the T20I tri-series between Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Australia in Zimbabwe in the early July.

Currently, the 29-year-old all-rounder is busy in Victoria’s three-day training camp at the HMAS Cerberus Naval Base.

Talking about his fitness, Maxwell told cricket.com.au on Thursday, “There was a lot of fluid built up around the bursa, and that was pinching. My range of movement was restricted quite a bit – it still is a little bit. I can’t reach fully above my head consistently. Every now and then it just pinches.

“I was able to get through with the T20 series in Zimbabwe (after England) and just find a way to throw comfortably, and by the end of that series, I felt like I was throwing really well. But once I got home it was about making sure I could sustain it for the rest of my career. That’s what this period is about now.”

Maxwell is hopeful to return in the Test squad during the Australia tour of UAE for the bilateral series against Pakistan that will begin in this October.

Apart from playing 84 ODIs and 49 T20Is, Maxwell also has played 7 Tests after making debut in that format in March 2013. In the last year, after making a comeback in the Test squad around three years later, Maxwell played four Tests and all the matches played on the Asian soil. In the comeback Test in March 2017, he hit a century (104) against India at Ranchi but later failed to maintain that performance.

Hoping to make a return in Test cricket, Maxell says that he is preparing himself to get ready for the Test selection. He said, “As far as UAE is concerned, you can’t really count on selection. You’ve just got to basically get yourself ready for what is in the foreseeable future. If selection goes my way – I really hope it does – I’ll be ready for that.”
