After a stellar performance in the recent World Cup, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is determined to make his Test comeback, harboring a long-held dream of playing red-ball cricket. Despite his remarkable success in limited-overs cricket, having won multiple World Cups across formats, Maxwell’s Test career has been limited to just seven appearances, the last of which came in 2017.
With 339 runs at an average of 26.07 and eight wickets to his credit, the 35-year-old remains determined to prove his worth in the Test arena. Acknowledging the fierce competition within the current Australian Test side, Maxwell recognizes that opportunities may be limited on home soil. However, he believes his skills and experience make him a valuable asset for subcontinent tours.
“I’m quite understanding of the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions,” Glenn Maxwell stated on Australian radio station SEN. “There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a subcontinent tour, I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side,” he added.

With the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle (2023-2025) set to include a tour of Sri Lanka for the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy in 2025, Maxwell remains hopeful of securing a place in the squad.
“I don’t think there’s another subcontinent tour until early 2025. So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage,” he said.

In the lead-up to Australia’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan at home, the retirement of David Warner has dominated headlines. Former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson sparked controversy with a scathing column questioning Warner’s hero’s send-off, citing his recent form and involvement in the ball-tampering scandal.
While several current and former players have voiced their opinions on the matter, Maxwell has refrained from making any direct comments. However, he acknowledged Warner’s contributions to Australian cricket.

“I’m not going to throw my name into some headlines about this,” Glenn Maxwell said. “But Davey’s been an absolute champion of Australian cricket for a long period of time and the selectors were pretty clear on what they thought of it (selecting him). I’m looking forward to seeing Davey in that first Test and him making a lot of runs this summer,” he added.
With his unwavering determination and proven abilities, Glenn Maxwell is poised to make a strong case for his Test comeback, particularly in the subcontinent where his all-round skills could prove invaluable.
