Glenn McGrath, one of cricket’s greatest fast bowlers, believes Jasprit Bumrah must be more mindful of his workload as he moves forward in his career. The Indian pacer, who has been out of action since January due to a lower back injury sustained in the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, faces yet another challenge in managing his fitness.

Jasprit Bumrah’s career has been plagued by injuries since his international debut in 2016, forcing him to miss several key series and tournaments. With no official word on his return, he is also expected to sit out the initial phase of IPL 2025, a significant setback for Mumbai Indians.

McGrath, known for his incredible accuracy and longevity, shared his perspective on Bumrah’s struggles. He pointed out that the Indian speedster’s unique bowling action places excessive strain on his body, making it even more critical for him to manage his workload wisely.

“He puts more stress on his body than other bowlers. He has found ways to manage it, but unfortunately, not all the time. He has done it before (making comebacks from injury), so he will know better than anyone about the recovery time and the work required in the gym. But he’s not as young as he used to be, so he has to be smarter about what he does,” Glenn McGrath told the Times of India.

The former Australian great also emphasized the importance of off-field discipline in ensuring Bumrah’s longevity.

“He has to work even harder off the field. Being a fast bowler is like driving a car—if you don’t refuel, you’ll run out of energy sooner or later. My fuel tank was bigger than Jasprit’s because I didn’t bowl as fast as him. These guys know what works best for them, but if India are under pressure, they’ll need him,” Glenn McGrath added.

With India’s crucial five-Test series in England beginning on June 20, Bumrah’s presence will be vital. The speedster has taken 37 wickets in English conditions, and his ability to swing the ball both ways makes him a key asset. India will be hoping for a fully fit Bumrah as they prepare for one of their toughest overseas challenges.
