Gill was included in the playing XI as a replacement of Prithvi Shaw, who suffered significant failures in the first Test in Adelaide. Former Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath was all-praise for the youngster and said that his technique looks good and it looks like Shubman Gill belongs to the international stage.

During a chat on Sony Sports, Glenn McGrath said, “When I saw him the other day in the ODI, I thought he had a good technique, he looked like he belonged to international cricket. It was a pretty tough introduction to Test cricket there with the way Starc and Cummins were bowling, they (the batsmen) were playing and missing, there was that one edge that Labuschagne put down, but apart from that he looked pretty solid.”

Shubman Gill got a lifeline when he was batting on four when Marnus Labuschagne dropped a sitter at the third slip off the bowling of Pat Cummins. Notably, Gill has a first-class average second only to Vinod Kambli at the time of making a Test debut. Shubman has played in 23 first-class matches so far and amassed 2,270 runs with the help of 7 century and 11 fifties at a staggering average of 68.78.

Former Indian fast bowler, Ajit Agarkar, speaking on the same show, said that Gill should have got the opportunity to make his debut a couple of years ago.

During the same show, Ajit Agarkar said, “Shubman Gill has shown promise for a while. In my opinion, he should have gotten an opportunity a couple of years back. He just looks ready, he has the potential. It couldn’t have been easy this little period (against Australia pacers) but he just grew in confidence with every ball.”
