Gujarat Titans have suffered a blow mid-season as New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has flown back home after sustaining a groin injury during the IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6. The franchise confirmed his departure in an official statement, wishing him a swift recovery.

The injury occurred in the sixth over of SRH’s innings while Phillips was fielding as a substitute. Positioned at point, he sprinted after a soft push from Ishan Kishan and, in the process of throwing the ball back to the wicketkeeper, appeared to over-stretch, immediately collapsing in pain. The Gujarat Titans physio rushed to the scene and, after an extended break in play, Phillips was helped off the field, clearly in discomfort.

Glenn Phillips was acquired by GT for ₹2 crore in the previous mega auction, but he hadn’t featured in a game this season before the injury curtailed his campaign. At this point, the team management hasn’t announced a replacement.

GT is already operating without Kagiso Rabada, who returned to South Africa due to a personal commitment. With Phillips out, the team’s overseas options now include Jos Buttler, Sherfane Rutherford, Gerald Coetzee, and Afghan duo Rashid Khan and Karim Janat.
Despite these setbacks, Gujarat Titans — led by Shubman Gill — have looked dominant, winning four of their five matches and currently sitting atop the IPL 2025 points table.

Their next fixture is against Lucknow Super Giants at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium on Saturday, followed by a home clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad against Delhi Capitals on April 19. Phillips’ absence will test GT’s squad depth, but given their current momentum and overseas bench strength, the Titans will be hopeful of maintaining their winning run in the league.
