Liam Dawson has officially brought the curtain down on his First-Class career, ending a remarkable red-ball journey with Hampshire County Cricket Club after more than 200 appearances. The experienced England all-rounder has decided to step away from the longer format in a bid to extend his white-ball career, while continuing to represent Hampshire in the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup competitions.

At 36, Dawson leaves behind an outstanding County Championship legacy built across nearly two decades. The left-arm spinning all-rounder scored over 10,000 First-Class runs and claimed more than 350 wickets, establishing himself as one of Hampshire’s most influential cricketers of the modern era. His consistent performances at county level also earned him opportunities with the England cricket team, where he featured in four Test matches, including a memorable unbeaten 66 on debut against India.

Confirming his decision through a statement released by Hampshire, Dawson admitted the move was emotional but necessary for the next phase of his career. “I’ve decided to retire from First-Class cricket. It’s a decision that I haven’t taken lightly, but I feel for the benefit of prolonging my career in white-ball cricket, the time is right,” Dawson said.

The veteran all-rounder also reflected on his long association with Hampshire and thanked supporters who backed him throughout his career at the Utilita Bowl. “I’m extremely proud to have played over 200 games for Hampshire and have had some amazing memories with so many players over the years. Hampshire will always be my home,” he added.

Dawson’s final few years in red-ball cricket showcased some of the best form of his career. Across the 2023 and 2024 County Championship seasons, he piled up 1,796 runs, smashed six centuries, and picked up 103 wickets at an impressive average below 23. His dominant all-round displays earned him several prestigious honours in 2024.

He became the first purely domestic cricketer since 2018 to win the PCA Men’s Player of the Year award, while also collecting the PCA Men’s Domestic Overall MVP and County Championship Player of the Year accolades. His exceptional season was further recognised when he was named among Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year.

Among Hampshire players this century, only Robin Smith, Jimmy Adams, and James Vince have scored more First-Class runs than Dawson. During his red-ball career, he registered 17 centuries and 54 half-centuries, with a highest score of 171 against Kent in Canterbury in 2022.

One of Dawson’s most iconic achievements came in 2023 when he became the first Hampshire player since CB Llewellyn in 1903 to score a century and claim 10 wickets in the same match. Remarkably, he repeated the feat again against Lancashire a year later.

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White praised Dawson’s immense contribution, describing him as one of the county’s greatest modern servants. “He leaves a huge hole in the team and will be hard to replace,” White said while also confirming Dawson remains a key figure in Hampshire’s white-ball plans moving forward.

Although his First-Class chapter has now closed, Dawson’s influence on Hampshire cricket is far from over. The experienced all-rounder will continue to play a vital role in the club’s white-ball ambitions, ensuring fans will still get to watch one of their modern greats in action for years to come.
