The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is evenly poised at 1-1 after India’s loss in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval. With the third Test set to commence at the Gabba in Brisbane on Saturday, December 14, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Team India. A victory is crucial not only for the series but also to keep their prospects alive for a direct berth in the World Test Championship Final.
One of the key talking points ahead of the match is India’s spinning option. In Adelaide, Ravichandran Ashwin was the preferred choice, but his solitary wicket in the second Test has sparked debate. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has suggested Washington Sundar as a better option over both Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

Speaking to Star Sports, Harbhajan SIngh shared his views: “If we have to play a spinner, I think Team India should consider Washington Sundar. He played well in Perth, and his bowling was impressive. He’s also performed admirably against New Zealand, which must have boosted his confidence.”
Cheteshwar Pujara, India’s dependable middle-order batter, echoed Harbhajan’s sentiments and backed Sundar as a viable choice for the Gabba. While Jadeja has yet to feature in the series, Sundar’s all-round capabilities could be the deciding factor in team selection.
“There can be only one change. Washington can replace Ashwin if they want to strengthen their batting. There is no comparison in bowling—Ashwin is an excellent bowler. But if the team wants additional depth in batting, Washington is the better pick,” Chetehswar Pujara explained.
