Former Indian cricketer and seasoned IPL commentator Harbhajan Singh found himself in the midst of a storm after making a controversial remark during the IPL 2025 clash between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). While providing live commentary, Harbhajan compared England speedster Jofra Archer to a “black taxi” in London, sparking widespread backlash and accusations of racism.

The incident occurred during the 18th over of SRH’s innings when Archer was bowling to Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. Klaasen had just dispatched Archer for back-to-back boundaries, prompting Harbhajan to comment, “London me kaali taxi ka meter tez bhaagta hai, aur yaha pe Archer sahab ka meter bhi tez bhaaga hai” (Like the meter of London’s black taxis, Archer’s meter has also been on the higher side).

Though seemingly meant as a lighthearted observation about Archer’s expensive over, the comment quickly drew criticism for its racial undertones. Social media erupted almost instantly, with many fans condemning the remark as racially insensitive. Some called for Harbhajan’s removal from the IPL 2025 commentary panel, demanding an official apology.

The situation is particularly tense given Harbhajan’s previous controversies, including the infamous “Monkeygate” scandal during India’s 2008 tour of Australia, which involved racial allegations against the late Andrew Symonds.

Adding to the tension, neither Harbhajan nor the IPL governing body has issued an official statement or apology. The broadcasting officials also faced criticism for not addressing the comment during the live telecast. As for Archer, it was a day to forget as he ended with figures of 0/76 — the most expensive spell in IPL history, surpassing Mohit Sharma’s 0/73.

Amid the controversy, SRH’s performance stood out. They posted a formidable 286/6, just two runs shy of their own IPL record. Ishan Kishan led the charge with a blistering 45-ball century, propelling Hyderabad to a 44-run victory. However, the overshadowing controversy around Harbhajan’s comment has left a lasting mark on what should have been a celebration of cricketing brilliance.
