India’s former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is once again making headlines, but this time not for his exploits on the field. According to a report by The Indian Express, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has nominated him as their representative for the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This could pave the way for Harbhajan to play an influential role in Indian cricket administration.

The September AGM carries huge importance as several high-profile positions are set to be discussed. These include the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary, and Treasurer. Additionally, representatives for the BCCI Apex Council and the IPL Governing Council will also be finalised.
While elections are technically part of the agenda, the report suggests that most appointments will be made through internal discussions rather than competitive voting. For Harbhajan Singh, this nomination marks his first real step into cricket governance.

He won’t be alone in this arena. Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly will represent the Cricket Association of Bengal, while Karnataka has nominated Raghuram Bhatt. Sanjay Naik will step in for Mumbai, Arun Dhumal for Himachal Pradesh, and Rajeev Shukla for Uttar Pradesh. Other names include Jaydev Shah for Saurashtra, Pranav Amin for Baroda, and RI Palani for Tamil Nadu.
Interestingly, the BCCI reportedly approached other retired cricketers for administrative roles, but none agreed to take them up. Even Sachin Tendulkar’s name briefly floated in speculation, before the batting maestro firmly dismissed any such plans.

The biggest talking point remains the vacant BCCI president’s chair, left open since Roger Binny stepped down after turning 70. With Harbhajan entering the frame, it will be intriguing to see whether the board opts for another former cricketer to lead Indian cricket from the top seat.
