Renowned Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has expressed his disappointment with the selectors’ decision to exclude Yuzvendra Chahal from the Asia Cup 2023 squad. Despite Chahal’s omission, Kuldeep Yadav was included as the sole wrist spinner, along with spin all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.
Harbhajan emphasized that Chahal is India’s best spinner in limited-overs cricket and stated that a few subpar performances shouldn’t label him as a poor bowler. Despite being in and out of the team in recent years, the veteran leg spinner remains a strong contender in Harbhajan’s eyes.
“Missing Yuzvendra Chahal is one thing I feel. He’s a leg-spinner who can turn the ball away. When you talk about genuine spinners, I don’t think there’s anyone better than Chahal in white-ball formats in India. Yes, he’s had a few off games, but that doesn’t make him a bad bowler,” Harbhajan Singh expressed on his YouTube channel.
Harbhajan further suggested that Chahal should be considered for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be held in India from October 5. Harbhajan believes that a player who returns to the squad after facing setbacks can make a significant impact, and Chahal’s presence could have been crucial for the team.
“I believe his presence in the team was necessary. I hope the doors are still open for him. It’s crucial to think about him for the World Cup since it’s in India. Chahal has proven to be a match-winner. While his recent form might not be up to the mark, considering him for the team would have kept his confidence intact. Any player coming back after being dropped faces pressure to perform,” Harbhajan Singh added.
While Harbhajan acknowledges that Chahal’s form might have led to his exclusion, he remains hopeful that Chahal’s talent and potential impact will be recognized and considered for the national team’s future endeavors.
