The Mumbai Indians (MI), one of the most successful franchises in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, are gearing up for the 2025 season with renewed determination. Despite their illustrious past, MI has struggled in recent years, making the playoffs only once in the last four seasons. The transition from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya as captain in IPL 2024 led to significant backlash from fans, but the team is now focused on leaving past disappointments behind and reclaiming their dominance.

In the IPL 2025 mega-auction, MI took a strategic approach to rebuild their squad, prioritizing their bowling attack. With Wankhede Stadium known for its batting-friendly conditions, the franchise was keen on acquiring bowlers who could thrive under pressure. Their marquee signing was Trent Boult, reuniting him with Jasprit Bumrah to recreate one of IPL’s most formidable fast-bowling partnerships.
To further bolster the pace department, MI secured the services of Deepak Chahar, adding another experienced bowler to their lineup. The spin department also received a boost with the additions of Mitchell Santner and Karn Sharma, bringing versatility and depth to their attack. Meanwhile, MI strengthened their batting unit with overseas acquisitions like Will Jacks, Bevon Jacobs, and Ryan Rickelton.

Additionally, their scouting team continued its tradition of unearthing domestic talent, signing promising youngsters such as Robin Minz, Vignesh Puthur, and Raj Bawa. With a well-rounded squad, MI is aiming to make a strong statement this season. Reflecting on the auction and team strategy, captain Hardik Pandya expressed confidence in the squad’s balance.
“The players we targeted—especially the experienced ones—were always part of our plan. We had a clear vision of what we needed to strengthen, particularly in our bowling attack. Playing at Wankhede means dealing with high-scoring games, so having bowlers who can swing the ball and execute under pressure was a priority. I believe we’ve assembled a squad that has the right mix of experience and talent. Now, it’s about executing our plans on the field,” Hardik Pandya stated on Superstars on JioHotstar.

However, MI’s campaign will start with a slight setback as Pandya will miss the season opener against Chennai Super Kings due to a one-match suspension for a slow over-rate offense in IPL 2024. Additionally, there are concerns over Bumrah’s fitness, with reports suggesting he might miss the first few games.
Despite these early hurdles, MI remains optimistic about their chances, banking on their squad depth to fill in the gaps. Speaking about the young talents in the team, Pandya emphasized the importance of self-belief.

“The youngsters coming into IPL are incredibly talented. My message to them is simple—believe in yourself. Often, self-doubt can be a bigger obstacle than the actual competition. They have already proven their skills to reach this level, but mental strength will determine how they perform. Over the years, I’ve learned that success in cricket is not just about skill but about handling pressure, staying calm, and making the most of opportunities,” he added.
With a reinvigorated squad and a fresh mindset, Mumbai Indians are set to make a strong push for the title in IPL 2025. The journey won’t be easy, but if they execute their plans effectively, they could once again find themselves in contention for the coveted trophy.
