Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been fined following his side’s disappointing defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026 at Eden Gardens. The all-rounder landed in trouble after breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during a tense moment in the middle overs of the match. The IPL confirmed in an official statement that Hardik was fined 10 per cent of his match fee and handed one Demerit Point for a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the tournament’s Code of Conduct.

The article specifically relates to the abuse or misuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures during a match. The incident occurred during the 10th over of KKR’s run chase. Frustration appeared to boil over for the Mumbai Indians skipper as he walked back to his mark before delivering the fourth ball of the over. In a visible display of anger, Hardik forcefully knocked the bails off the stumps.
The IPL statement later confirmed that the MI captain accepted the offence and agreed to the sanction imposed by match referee Rajiv Seth. “Hardik Pandya admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by Match Referee Rajiv Seth,” the statement read.

The disciplinary action capped another frustrating evening for the Mumbai Indians, whose IPL 2026 campaign has failed to meet expectations. Already eliminated from playoff contention, the five-time champions once again struggled to put together a complete performance under pressure. Batting first on a difficult Eden Gardens pitch, the Mumbai Indians never truly recovered after losing early wickets in the powerplay.
KKR bowlers exploited the surface brilliantly, with Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey making early breakthroughs before Sunil Narine and the spin attack tightened control through the middle overs. Mumbai eventually finished with a below-par total of 147/8 in their 20 overs. Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya attempted to rebuild the innings, but neither batter could accelerate consistently on a surface offering grip and variable bounce.

Kolkata Knight Riders handled the chase far better despite the challenging conditions. Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell played calm, calculated knocks under pressure as KKR completed the chase with seven balls remaining to stay alive in the playoff race. The defeat once again highlighted the Mumbai Indians’ recurring issues this season, particularly their inability to recover after poor starts with the bat. Speaking after the game, Hardik admitted the early wickets proved costly.
“I think we lost a lot of wickets in the powerplay. If Tilak and I had stayed longer and built a few more partnerships, another 15-20 runs could have made a big difference,” Hardik Pandya said.

Despite the loss, the MI captain surprisingly praised the Eden Gardens pitch and welcomed conditions that offered assistance to bowlers in an increasingly batter-dominated IPL. “To be very honest, I don’t mind playing on these kinds of wickets where bowlers have something to work with. IPL is becoming very batting-dominated, and bowlers often feel helpless. This wicket made batters think and forced quality cricket from both sides,” he added.
While KKR kept their playoff hopes alive, the Mumbai Indians were left reflecting on another missed opportunity in a difficult IPL 2026 season.
