Ashwani Kumar made a dream debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, delivering a match-winning performance in Mumbai Indians’ (MI) emphatic eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium. The young left-arm pacer dismantled KKR’s middle order with a stunning four-wicket haul, earning him the Dressing Room Best Bowler award from MI skipper Hardik Pandya.

Recognizing Ashwani’s impact, Hardik Pandya praised the youngster while presenting him with a special pin. “Before the match, we spoke about intensity, ruthlessness, and what this MI badge stands for. He showed exactly what it means, and I’m very proud of him,” said Pandya.

The 23-year-old pacer made history by registering the best bowling figures by an Indian on IPL debut, returning figures of 4/24. His scalps included Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and the dangerous Andre Russell, leaving KKR reeling at 116 all out in just 16.2 overs. Deepak Chahar also contributed with two key wickets, further dismantling the opposition.
With the ball set up the game, MI’s batters ensured a swift chase. South African batter Ryan Rickelton anchored the innings with an unbeaten 62, guiding Mumbai to victory with 43 balls to spare.

Reflecting on Ashwani’s selection, Hardik Pandya revealed that the team noticed his potential during an intra-squad practice match. “We saw his zip, his late swing, his unique action, and the fact that he’s a left-armer. We backed him, and he delivered. That wicket of Russell was crucial, and even his catch of de Kock was outstanding,” Pandya added.
Adding to his fairytale debut, Ashwani also struck on his very first IPL delivery and later received his maiden Player of the Match award—a night to remember for MI’s rising star.
