Hardik Pandya’s turbulent journey with the Mumbai Indians could be heading towards an emotional end after reports emerged that the all-rounder has decided to leave the franchise following a disastrous IPL 2026 campaign. According to PTI, the Mumbai Indians captain informed the franchise management about his decision midway through the season, citing mental exhaustion, constant pressure and frustration within the team environment.

Pandya, who returned to the Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024 and replaced Rohit Sharma as captain, has endured an extremely difficult period over the last two seasons. The decision to hand him the leadership role immediately after his return created massive backlash among MI supporters, many of whom continued to openly boo him during matches.
Despite repeatedly trying to remain composed in public, the pressure reportedly took a significant toll on the 32-year-old all-rounder. “Hardik was mentally stressed and completely exhausted. He had also sustained a back injury,” a source close to the developments told PTI.

The report further claimed that once the Mumbai Indians’ playoff hopes were mathematically over this season, Pandya informed the franchise that he would not continue beyond IPL 2026. Mumbai Indians struggled badly throughout the campaign, with inconsistent performances, dressing-room tension and poor results derailing their season.
According to sources, one of the biggest issues for Pandya was the lack of unity within the squad and differing opinions among senior players. “The MI dressing room that he had left in 2021 wasn’t the same when he returned in 2024,” the source said. “Not every senior player was on the same page. When results don’t come and people pull in different directions, it becomes mentally draining,” the source added.

Reports also suggest that Pandya felt disappointed by the lack of support from certain senior players inside the franchise setup. Ironically, some of the same players who demanded complete commitment from him during India duty allegedly failed to offer the same backing when he became the captain of the Mumbai Indians.
At the moment, it remains unclear whether Hardik Pandya will seek a trade to another IPL franchise or enter the IPL auction pool before the 2027 cycle. However, one thing appears certain — his time with the Mumbai Indians is nearing an end. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians could now face another major transition period. Rohit Sharma, who led the franchise to five IPL titles, could emerge as a short-term captaincy solution if he continues for another season.

Young batter Tilak Varma is also being viewed internally as a long-term leadership option and a possible future captain. With the IPL 2027 mega auction approaching and several big decisions looming, the Mumbai Indians may now be forced to rebuild their core once again after one of the most turbulent phases in franchise history.
