Jasprit Bumrah finally broke his wicket drought in IPL 2026, delivering a statement performance for the Mumbai Indians against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The breakthrough came in style, as Bumrah dismissed Sai Sudharsan on the very first ball of the chase, sending the opener back for a golden duck.

The moment sparked an animated celebration from MI captain Hardik Pandya, who lifted Bumrah in delight — a reflection of how significant the wicket was for both player and team. Bumrah had gone wicketless in his first five matches this season, bowling 19 overs without success, making this breakthrough a timely boost.

Interestingly, this was the first time in IPL 2026 that Bumrah was given the new ball — a move that immediately paid off. Addressing questions around his usage, Pandya explained that Bumrah’s role has always been flexible rather than fixed.

“I’ve seen people ask why Bumrah doesn’t bowl the first over,” Hardik Pandya said. “But if you look at his career, he has rarely done that. It’s not about when he starts, it’s about how we use him.” He further emphasised that Bumrah’s versatility is what makes him special. “He’s someone you use based on match situations. But today, we wanted early impact, and there’s no one better.”

The win itself was crucial for the Mumbai Indians, who were looking to bounce back after a string of defeats. Pandya admitted that playing in Ahmedabad has historically been challenging for MI, making the victory even more satisfying.

“It was very important for us,” he added. “It’s never easy to win away from home, especially here. But we played good cricket, and this win was much needed.”
