KL Rahul has been struggling to stay fit in recent times and it may result in him losing vice-captaincy in at least one format. Rahul, who was elevated to vice-captaincy early in 2022, has been consistently losing games including the ongoing five-match T20I series against West Indies as well. His fitness issues could see him losing vice-captaincy to Hardik Pandya. According to the latest reports of InsideSport, Pandya will be named vice-captain when the BCCI announces the squad for T20 World Cup 2022.

As per the quotes in InsideSport, a senior BCCI official said, “Hardik is a world-class player and it’s great to have him back in the team at full fitness. Whether he will be named vice-captain is up to the selectors. But he is already a leader in the group. As an all-rounder, he understands both situations. He has outstanding leadership skills and we saw that in the IPL. He will surely do well.”

Hardik Pandya first joined the leadership group of the Indian team after leading Gujarat Titans to win the IPL 2022 as he propelled the debutant franchise to a title win. In the series against South Africa, he assisted Rishabh Pant after Rahul was ruled out.

Later in the month, Hardik Pandya was seen leading the men in blue during the two-match T20I series against Ireland. He has been named India’s deputy skipper for the ongoing T20I series against West Indies ahead of Rishabh and looks set to retain his place. It remains to be seen if Pandya is named the permanent deputy skipper of the team in the T20I format going ahead.

The clear picture should be out when the selectors will be finalizing the Asia Cup 2022 squad as Rahul is set to make his return for the tournament. In ODIs, Shikhar Dhawan and Rahul are part of the leadership group along with Rohit Sharma. Dhawan recently led India in the three-match ODI series in West Indies and will now lead the team against Zimbabwe.
