Hardik Pandya’s potential return to the Gujarat Titans appears to have hit a major roadblock, with his reported demand to reclaim the captaincy emerging as the key reason behind the breakdown in discussions. The all-rounder is currently leading the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, but speculation over his future has intensified following a difficult stint with the franchise.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Pandya held discussions with Gujarat Titans over a possible return. The franchise was reportedly open to the idea and even discussed the potential trade with current captain Shubman Gill. Gill was said to have no objection to Pandya returning to the team as a player. However, the situation reportedly changed when Hardik Pandya made captaincy a condition for his return. Gujarat Titans were unwilling to remove Gill from the leadership role, bringing the proposed deal to an end.

A source quoted by The Indian Express said the franchise was comfortable with Pandya returning but firmly rejected the captaincy condition. With Gill now an established leader for both Gujarat and India, the Titans appear keen to maintain continuity rather than make another leadership change.

Pandya has a strong connection with Gujarat Titans, having captained the franchise to the IPL title in their debut season in 2022. Under his leadership, GT defeated Rajasthan Royals in the final to become champions in their first-ever IPL campaign. They followed that with a runners-up finish in 2023 before Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season.

His move back to Mumbai came with significant expectations, particularly after he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain. However, Pandya faced criticism from sections of the fanbase and struggled to lead the franchise to consistent results.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has gradually strengthened his position as Gujarat’s leader and has also taken on greater responsibility with the Indian team. His growing stature appears to have played a major role in Gujarat’s reported decision not to entertain Pandya’s captaincy demand.

Pandya’s future at Mumbai Indians is also uncertain. According to Cricbuzz, several franchises have been linked with a possible trade, including Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Rajasthan Royals. However, no concrete deal has reportedly materialised, and Mumbai has yet to officially confirm that Pandya is available for trade.

Mumbai could still retain the all-rounder or explore alternative trade possibilities involving players such as Axar Patel, Yashasvi Jaiswal or Nicholas Pooran.

If Pandya prioritises a captaincy role, Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants could potentially offer opportunities. KKR are without Ajinkya Rahane after his retirement, while LSG have also experienced leadership changes. For now, however, Pandya’s IPL future remains uncertain.
