The skipper of India’s women’s T20I Harmanpreet Kaur has lost her position of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Punjab Police as her graduation degree turned out to be fake. The decision was taken by the home department and she is likely to be demoted to the post of a constable as her qualification now gets reduced to Class XII pass. However, the only good thing for the cricket is that the Punjab Police has decided not to initiate any lawsuit against the cricketer.
According to reports, Harmanpreet, who was born and brought up in Punjab’s Moga area, had submitted her graduation degree purportedly bestowed to her by Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. However, after the verification process, the degree turned out to be fake. The university clarified that they had no student named after her.
The case then went to the home department, headed by chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Harmanpreet, an Arjuna awardee, was earlier an employee of the Indian Railways. She had resigned from the railways’ job to join Punjab Police in March 2018.

Meanwhile, Harmanpreet’s family had earlier denied the allegations. As quoted in News18, Harmanpreet’s father Harminder Singh said, “She did her schooling from Moga and was then selected in the Indian cricket team. She completed her remaining studies from Delhi and Meerut. She was provided a job by the Indian Railways on the basis of the same documents.”
However, when contacted on her mobile phone, Kau replied that she is not well and she will respond to it later as quoted in the Times of India.
“The state government has written to Harmanpreet that since now her qualification can only be treated as Class XII, she can at best be retained by Punjab Police as constable,” the paper quoted a senior government functionary in Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s office.
In a similar case in February, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Mandeep Kaur was also removed from DSP’s post after her graduate degree was found to be fake.
