England captain Harry Brook has made it clear that representing his country remains his top priority, even if it means missing out on the riches of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Ahead of the fifth and final T20I against India in Southampton, Brook explained why he decided to skip the IPL despite being one of the world’s most sought-after T20 batters. Brook’s decision came at a cost. After withdrawing from the IPL just before the start of the tournament, the England captain was handed a two-year ban by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), making him ineligible to feature in the competition until the 2028 season under the tournament’s player withdrawal regulations.

His comments came as England prepares for one final push to complete a dominant T20I series against India. The hosts already hold an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match contest and now have the opportunity to end the series on an even stronger note while also closing the gap on India in the ICC T20I rankings. Despite suffering back-to-back series defeats against Ireland and England, India continues to occupy the No. 1 position in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings due to their significant ratings advantage built over the past few years.
The reigning T20 World Cup champions have endured a difficult transition under new captain Shreyas Iyer, losing five consecutive completed T20Is for the first time in recent history. England, meanwhile, have looked like a well-drilled unit throughout the series under Brook’s leadership. The young skipper has impressed with his tactical flexibility, making smart bowling changes, adjusting field placements according to match-ups and shuffling the batting order whenever required. His proactive captaincy has played a major role in England’s dominance.

Brook has also led from the front with the bat. In the fourth T20I at Bristol, he smashed an unbeaten 79 off just 35 deliveries, guiding England to a comfortable nine-wicket victory alongside Phil Salt, who remained unbeaten on 59. Earlier in the series in Manchester, Brook had blasted 39 runs from only 15 balls, including a brutal assault on Arshdeep Singh, from whom he collected 26 runs in a single over.
His performances have once again highlighted why he is regarded as one of the cleanest ball-strikers in world cricket across formats. Given his explosive batting ability, many fans have questioned why Brook would willingly stay away from the IPL, the biggest franchise T20 league in the world.

The England captain, however, insisted that managing his workload is more important than chasing franchise contracts. With responsibilities across all three formats and leadership duties in white-ball cricket, Brook believes the IPL window provides him with an ideal opportunity to recover physically and sharpen his game ahead of England’s demanding international calendar.
“I think going to the IPL is a great experience. I really enjoyed my time when I went to the IPL. But I don’t see where I can play it at the minute. Playing all three formats and captaining two of the sides, I’ve got a lot on my plate,” Harry Brook told reporters.

“Those three months are a perfect time for me to have a break, work hard on my fitness and my game, and try to be the best I can for English cricket during the summer and whatever we have in the winter as well,” he added.
With England aiming to complete a commanding series victory in Southampton, Brook will once again look to inspire his side while remaining focused on his long-term commitment to English cricket.
