Harry Brook has played down any imminent ambitions to captain England, despite ongoing speculation about potential changes in the white-ball leadership. Current captain Jos Buttler and coach Matthew Mott’s future is under review after England fell well below par in both the 50-over and T20 World Cups, with Brook, 25, mentioned as a possible successor. However, his focus remains on his upcoming role as captain of the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

“This is my first captaincy role with the Superchargers. We will see how that goes, and maybe in a couple of months I will have a different answer. I do not see anything happening any time soon, so I’ll just stay in the moment and focus on Test cricket,” Harry Brook told BBC.

Brook, who has also shined in Test cricket, recently made his maiden first home Test century in the second Test against West Indies at Trent Bridge. He showed that he is highly committed to the game’s longest form by saying, “Test cricket comes first. I want to play every Test match I can for England.”

After the final Test against West Indies at Edgbaston, starting on Friday, Brook will join up with Northern Superchargers for The Hundred. As his public profile continues to grow, Brook is keeping a feet-on-the-floor attitude towards his prospects of becoming captain. Managing director Rob Key has given no guarantees over the futures of Buttler and Mott, suggesting changes could be made in the interests of progressing the white-ball team.

Brook says questions about leadership are “above his pay grade” as he prepares for his first senior leadership role with the Superchargers, where he will be coached by former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.

“‘Fred just asked me if I wanted to be captain, he thought I’d do a decent job, so we’ll see how we go,” said Harry Brook. “I’ll be a pretty chilled captain. We’ve said all the training is optional. There’s nothing put on you as a player. Just be chilled, relaxed, go out there and express yourself and play,” he added. Brook’s pragmatism and laying emphasis on pleasure and expression signal a very balanced attitude towards the game despite him being early in his leadership journey.
