Shubman Gill, India’s Test captain, continued his sublime run of form in the second Test at Edgbaston, converting his rich vein into a historic feat as he slammed his second century of the match, extending India’s lead to a dominant 484 runs by tea on Day 4. Despite England’s Harry Brook cheekily urging him to declare with a 450-run lead due to a grim weather forecast for Day 5, Gill paid no heed, staying focused on putting the match beyond England’s grasp.

“450 declare? Shubman, it’s raining tomorrow. Half day. Afternoon, it’s raining. Bad luck for us. Take the draw,” Harry Brook was heard saying on the stump mic. Gill didn’t flinch, continuing to pile on the runs with remarkable calmness.

Shubman Gill reached his century in style, nudging a single off Shoaib Bashir just before the tea interval as India finished at 304/4 in their second innings. It marked his third century in four innings, and with that, he also overtook Sunil Gavaskar’s tally for most runs by an Indian in a Test match.

Rishabh Pant, too, dazzled in a quickfire knock of 65 off just 58 balls, partnering with Gill for a brisk 110-run stand. Pant’s innings was full of flair, culminating in a fittingly dramatic end as he lost control of his bat trying to slog Bashir out of the ground.

Earlier in the day, England tried bouncing Gill out post-lunch, but the Indian skipper countered with authority, pulling Josh Tongue for two commanding sixes. KL Rahul had fallen early to a brilliant delivery from Tongue, but Pant’s strokeplay revived the innings, pushing India firmly into a position of strength heading into the final day.
