Virat Kohli’s leadership extended beyond the crease as he mentored debutant Harshit Rana during pivotal moments of the ongoing first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Kohli, acting as a guide for the young pacer, played a significant role in planning Mitchell Starc’s dismissal on Day 2, marking a memorable chapter in Rana’s debut Test.

Earlier in the day, Starc had sledged Rana, issuing a cheeky warning about his pace and long memory. However, Rana had the last laugh, thanks to Kohli’s sharp cricketing acumen. Observing the situation, Kohli advised Rana to deliver a bouncer to unsettle Starc. The strategy paid off brilliantly as Rana executed the plan to perfection.

Rana bowled a good-length delivery at 131 kph, tempting Starc into an aggressive slog. The ball took a thick edge and ballooned into the air, creating a tense moment. Rishabh Pant, displaying remarkable composure, called off the nearby fielders and positioned himself expertly under the ball, completing a clean catch.

Mitchell Starc’s defiant knock of 26 off 112 balls came to an end, and Rana sealed Australia’s innings at a mere 104, handing India a valuable 46-run lead. Harshit Rana’s debut performance was nothing short of impressive. Finishing with figures of 3/48 in 15.2 overs, including three maidens, he showcased remarkable skill and maturity.

His maiden Test wicket came on Day 1 when he dismissed Travis Head with a delivery that angled in and straightened off the seam. Head, caught off guard, was clean bowled for 11. Rana’s second wicket came when he removed Nathan Lyon with a short ball. Lyon’s delayed reaction caused the ball to glance off his glove, landing safely in KL Rahul’s hands at third slip. Lyon departed for just 5 runs, adding to Australia’s woes.

Australia’s total of 104 marked their lowest first-innings score and the fourth-lowest overall against India in Test cricket. Rana’s stellar debut, combined with Kohli’s guidance, underlined the value of teamwork and mentorship, leaving fans eager to see how the series unfolds.
