Former India batter turned commentator Cheteshwar Pujara feels that cramps played a big role in Ravindra Jadeja’s last-over dismissal on Day 1 of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo (SSC) on Sunday, August 23 as well. Pujara said that Jadeja should have retired hurt and come back fresh on Day 2 of the contest as well. Batting first, India reached 300-5 in 85 overs at stumps on Day 1 against Sri Lanka in Colombo as well.

During a discussion on Cricinfo, Pujara said: “His concentration was dropping because he was getting too many cramps. He didn’t judge the line and the length of that delivery. As a batter, when you have to call your physio on two occasions, then your concentration is getting disturbed. I feel if Jadeja was getting too many cramps, it was ideal for him to go back to the dressing room and come back fresh tomorrow.”

While Devdutt Padikkal was brilliant with the bat for India yet again with another hundred, some players got out to soft dismissals after getting starts. KL Rahul (18) top-edged a wide delivery, whereas Yashasvi Jaiswal (45) was bowled by a length ball from round the wicket as well. Later, captain Shubman Gill (50) also nicked a seemingly harmless short-and-wide ball to the keeper as well.

“As a team, there was a clear game plan where you want to put pressure on bowlers. But, that’s not the kind of shot you expect from KL Rahul. It was on fifth stump. Yashasvi, again, got off to a good start, but played a shot that wasn’t ideal. And Shubman, after getting set, you don’t play that shot outside the off stump. So yeah, there were too many soft dismissals,” Cheteshwar Pujara concluded.
