As the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval heads into a decisive Day 5, all eyes are on one unlikely factor that could sway the balance—the heavy roller. England, needing just 35 more runs to secure a 3-1 series win, stand on the brink of a memorable victory. India, however, has their eyes set on the remaining four English wickets that could help it level the fiercely contested series 2-2.

The debate around the impact of the heavy roller has gained traction, mainly after England used it to good effect on Day 4. Noted commentator Harsha Bhogle took to social media to highlight how the roller could once again play a pivotal role on Day 5. “I’m glad others are asking why the covers weren’t removed earlier to let us witness a thrilling finish. Now we return tomorrow, and with the heavy roller available, that could be a game-changer,” harsha Bhogle tweeted.
I am glad there are people other than me asking why the covers couldn’t have come off in time to allow us to witness an extraordinary climax. Now we come back tomorrow but the heavy roller can be used and that can be a game-changer.

According to ICC regulations, teams are allowed to use the roller before play begins on any day, barring the first innings, for up to seven minutes. The batting side’s captain can delay the start to as late as ten minutes before play. For England, this brief window could be enough to gain a significant edge on a wearing pitch, especially given their aggressive batting style and the small target left.

Joe Root, who anchored England’s chase with a masterful 39th Test century, acknowledged the roller’s impact. “It’s definitely played a role throughout the game. Whether that continues tomorrow, we’ll find out, but fingers crossed it flattens things out again for us,” he said.
India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel, however, brushed aside concerns over the roller. “We’ll focus on our preparation, hit the right areas with the ball, and try to bring back some excitement into the game,” he remarked, showing confidence in his bowling unit.
