Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs didn’t hold back in his assessment of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Travis Head following SRH’s loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). His remarks came in response to Head’s bold statement about aiming for a 300-run innings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Despite their recent form, SRH faced a setback against the struggling RCB in the 41st match of the IPL 2024 season, losing by 35 runs at Hyderabad on April 25. The defeat ended SRH’s four-match winning streak in the tournament.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, RCB posted a formidable total of 206/7 in their 20 overs. Virat Kohli (51 off 43) and Rajat Patidar (50 off 20) anchored the innings, with Cameron Green contributing an unbeaten 37 off 20 balls in the death overs.

During the chase, SRH struggled as key batsmen Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen fell early. Head managed just one run off three deliveries before being dismissed by Will Jacks in the first over.

Herschelle Gibbs responded to Head’s pre-match comment about aiming for a 300-plus total. His remarks suggested that chasing a challenging target on a slow pitch requires as much skill as setting a high score in the first innings. “I know Travis Head said he wants 300, but chasing 207 on a slower wicket would have been just as skillful,” Gibbs commented on X (formerly known as Twitter) following the SRH vs RCB match.

While SRH had scored over 250 runs three times earlier in the IPL season, Gibbs emphasized the significance of successful chases in cricket, suggesting that while high scores may be achieved, the essence lies in the art of the chase.

“Talking international cricket, I’m pretty sure 300 in T20s and 500 in ODIs will be scored, but the beauty will always be in the chase,” Herschelle Gibbs added.

Despite the loss, SRH maintains their position at third place on the IPL 2024 league table with 10 points from eight matches. RCB, on the other hand, remains at the bottom with only four points from nine matches. SRH will face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their next match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, April 28.
