Virat Kohli made his return to domestic cricket last week, playing for Delhi in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group D match against Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. It had been over 12 years since Kohli had last featured in a Ranji match, but his comeback didn’t go as planned. The star batter was dismissed cheaply for just six runs off 15 balls by Railways pacer Himanshu Sangwan.

Sangwan got the better of Kohli by breaching his defense and knocking over his stumps after Kohli had hit him for a four off the previous delivery. Delhi’s innings was soon wrapped up, and Kohli didn’t have an opportunity to bat in the second innings as Railways went on to win by an innings and 19 runs.

After the match, Sangwan, who had bowled superbly with figures of 4 for 55 in 25.4 overs, met Kohli in the dressing room. In a moment that quickly went viral, Sangwan asked Kohli to sign the ball he had used to dismiss him. Kohli, with a smile, asked, “Is this the same ball from which you got me out? Kya gend tha yaar, maza aa gaya (what a beautiful delivery it was).”

During their brief conversation, Kohli learned that Sangwan had played for Delhi at the U19 level. He complimented the young pacer, saying, “Kaafi teekhe bowler ho (You are a good bowler). Keep working hard. Best wishes for your future.”

The match attracted over 10,000 fans who were eager to watch Kohli bat, but his performance was a disappointment. He came in to bat at No. 4 for the Ayush Badoni-led side, managing just one four before being sent back to the pavilion.

Despite the lack of runs, Kohli’s return to domestic cricket generated a lot of excitement. The former India captain will now shift his focus to the upcoming ODI series against England, with the first match set to take place on February 6 at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.
