With the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 less than a year away, discussions around India’s potential opening combination have begun to intensify. Following the retirement of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the T20I format after their victorious campaign last year, the team is entering a transition phase. Former West Indies fast bowler and renowned commentator Ian Bishop has thrown his weight behind one name—Abhishek Sharma.

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut during his stint as a broadcaster for IPL 2025, Ian Bishop identified the 23-year-old left-hander as a leading contender for the role. “Abhishek has been given a proper run in recent T20Is, especially during the South Africa series alongside Tilak Varma. Unless he suffers a massive dip in form, like five ducks in a row, I think he remains at the front of the queue,” Bishop observed.

Abhishek’s aggressive style, combined with his ability to clear the ropes from ball one, has been a standout feature of his game. While his IPL 2025 form has been mixed, his previous international outings have displayed both potential and intent—qualities that align well with India’s new T20 template.

Bishop also praised Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan, whose composed approach and strong domestic form have caught the eye. However, Bishop highlighted how Sudharsan’s current role requires him to anchor the innings for GT—something that may be less effective on the international stage unless redefined.

“Imagine giving Sudharsan the freedom to just go out and express himself—no burden of responsibility, no fear of failure. He could become a completely different player,” Ian Bishop suggested, acknowledging India’s wealth of top-order options.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee certainly has its task cut out. India’s bench strength is brimming with talent, and the race for the opening slots will only intensify as the World Cup nears. As of now, Abhishek Sharma’s high-impact, high-tempo approach gives him a slender edge, though the next few months will be crucial in shaping final decisions.
