Former West Indies cricketer, Ian Bishop urged Jasprit Bumrah to find his own way to make a comeback, while pointing out that it is too late to tweak his bowling action. Bumrah has been out of action since September 2022 after suffering a major back issue. He missed the Asia Cup and the following T20 World Cup last year. He was drafted into India’s ODI squad against Sri Lanka, but he did not take part.

The 29-year-old, who underwent back surgery in New Zealand recently, further missed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 and was ruled out of the IPL 2023. As he continues to be on the sidelines, Bishop said that there is no definite way of gaming the workload of someone like Bumrah.

Explaining the same, during a chat with PTI, Ian Bishop said, “Any fast bowler worth his soul can play all game formats all year and maintain his cutting-edge pace, it is just too demanding. The sprint up and down, the hamstring, the body’s workload. It has to be managed. I don’t think there is any one recipe (to manage workload).”

He further added, “Because we don’t decide on the minds and bodies of these outstanding athletes. That decision has to be made by the individual and administrators close to him but I will throw one thing out for governing bodies, it is just an advice. You can’t play these guys (Bumrah and Co.) in every tournament.”

When asked about tweaking Bumrah’s bowling action, Ian Bishop bluntly said that it is too late now. Bishop also added that he is eagerly waiting for Bumrah to make a comeback. However, it is yet to be determined when the India fast bowler will make his return.

Ian Bishop elaborated, “I don’t think you can look at changing his action. I tried to do that with mine and messed it up totally. I would personally look at managing what he does. Strengthening the core muscles of the body a lot. He is not 21 or 22. When you have done what he has done most of his career, it is hard to make a significant change. You can tweak it in some way shape or form but perhaps that is all he would be able to do. Can’t wait for him to come back.’
