India clinched a commanding 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test match at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, continuing their impressive form in the World Test Championship (WTC). Following the win, former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell highlighted the critical need for India to maintain the fitness of key players like Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant as the team moves forward in the WTC.

Bumrah’s performance was pivotal in India’s victory. He claimed four wickets in the first innings and added another in the second, showcasing his value to the team. However, with a packed schedule ahead, including a three-Test home series against New Zealand and a challenging five-Test away series against Australia, Chappell believes managing player fitness will be essential for India’s WTC campaign.

In his ESPNcricinfo column, Chappell emphasized that India’s primary goal should be to get more players in form without risking major injuries. He noted that Bumrah’s fitness, along with Pant’s, is essential given their roles in the team.

“India’s main objective should be to get as many players into form while avoiding significant injuries. However, the primary focus must be on ensuring that both Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant remain fit,” Ian Chappell wrote.

He also praised Pant’s evolution as a wicketkeeper, particularly in his improved ability to handle spin bowling. Pant’s growth, according to Chappell, is the result of hard work and a stern ultimatum from former India coach Ravi Shastri.

Pant’s ability to stand up to the stumps has significantly bolstered India’s fielding, allowing the slip fielders to spread wider, covering more ground. Chappell praised Pant’s development from a questionable keeper to a reliable gloveman as a testament to his dedication.

India’s next big challenge will be the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which begins on November 22 in Perth. With five Tests, including a day-night match in Adelaide, the series will be a crucial test for India as they aim to solidify their WTC standing.
