“The first real incident during that time was Australia against India in Adelaide shortly after poor Phillip Hughes had passed away (in 2014). It was the most surreal game of cricket for two days that I have ever known. But the next three days it’s like a war out there,” Gould said.

Gould was the TV Umpire when the surreal events of the 2018 Newlands ball-tampering scandal happened. He believed that the Australian team was out of control leading up to the incident which shocked the cricketing fraternity. “I believe Australia was out of control leading up to the ball-tampering issues,” he said.

In the Adelaide Test, Australia notched up 517 batting first while The visitors could only manage 444 runs. Australia declared on 290 for five in the second innings. Asked to chase the target of 364 runs, the Indian team fell short by 48 runs.

Recently, the former international umpire voiced his opinion in support of the removal of ‘umpire’s call’ from the Decision Review System (DRS). The former English cricketer is in agreement with the idea of removing  ‘umpire’s call’  and bringing a change within the DRS system. Ian is now busy promoting his book ‘Gunner: My Life in Cricket’.
