Rishabh Pant’s return to cricket has been nothing short of remarkable, according to former New Zealand cricketer Ian Smith. Following a serious car accident in late 2022, Pant has bounced back with impressive form, becoming the leading run-scorer for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL and earning a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad.

“Pant has come back very strong,” says Ian Smith, highlighting the southpaw’s aggressive and dynamic batting style. “He’s looked terrific” adds Smith, impressed by Pant’s recent performances.

Ian Smith goes on to praise Pant’s versatility. “He can compliment who’s with him,” explains Smith, emphasizing Pant’s ability to adjust his batting depending on the situation and the other batsmen at the crease. “Whether he comes in to support Kohli or Rohit Sharma,” Smith continues, “number three is a good spot for him.”

In Smith’s opinion, white-ball cricket thrives when the best players face the most balls, and Pant’s adaptability makes him a valuable asset.

“He can hit the first ball out of the ground,” emphasizes Smith, acknowledging Pant’s explosive power. “He also has other options if it doesn’t work out,” adds Ian Smith, highlighting Pant’s ability to adjust his batting approach. Smith further emphasizes Pant’s role by stating, “He’s replaced a very good player in KL Rahul. That says it all for me.”

While acknowledging similarities between Pant and Australian legend Adam Gilchrist, Smith believes Pant has a long way to go to match Gilchrist’s impressive career statistics.

“He’s got a bit to go,” admits Ian Smith. However, Smith recognizes the potential in Pant. “There’s that similarity with Gilchrist,” says Smith, referencing Pant’s ability to bat both at the top of the order in white-ball cricket and lower down in Tests. “If he continues like this for a few more years,” Smith concludes, “people will start comparing him closely to Gilchrist.”
