The Perth Stadium pitch, which hosted the opening Ashes Test, has received an “excellent” rating from the International Cricket Council despite the match finishing inside two dramatic days. Under the ICC’s four-tier pitch evaluation system, “very good” is the highest possible rating, reserved for surfaces that offer good carry, minimal seam movement, and consistent bounce — qualities that ensure a fair contest between bat and ball.

The ICC maintained that the pitch delivered precisely that, even if the Test itself turned into a fast-paced spectacle dominated by world-class pace bowling. Australia took a 1-0 lead in the five-match Ashes series with an eight-wicket win in a match that saw 19 wickets tumble on the opening day alone.

England were skittled for 172, with Mitchell Starc producing a sensational 7 for 58. Australia then slumped to 121 for 9 by stumps, leaving the contest finely balanced. Day two followed the same frenetic script. England were bowled out for 164 before Travis Head took charge, smashing a breathtaking 123 off just 83 deliveries to power Australia to victory well ahead of schedule.

Cricket Australia’s chief of cricket, James Allsopp, backed the ICC’s assessment, saying the rating validated their belief that the surface offered a proper balance.

“The dominance of outstanding pace bowling from both teams made the match incredibly intense, even if it ended quicker than expected,” James Allsopp said. He acknowledged the disappointment of fans with tickets for days three and four but added that the thrilling action drew massive viewership and would inspire young cricketers.

While the early finish cost CA millions in lost ticket revenue, one positive emerged — Perth Stadium donated hundreds of kilograms of unused food to local charities. The focus now shifts to the day-night second Test beginning December 4 in Brisbane, where the traditionally fast and bouncy Gabba wicket awaits both teams.
