The ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 significantly contributed to India’s economy, adding USD 1.39 billion (approximately Rs 11,637 crore), according to a report by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Held from October 5 to November 19, 2023, the tournament spanned across 10 cities, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune.

Tourism substantially contributed to this economic boost, contributing USD 861.4 million through accommodation, travel, and food services. International tourists alone added USD 281.2 million to the economy. Notably, 19% of international attendees were first-time visitors to India, with 68% indicating they would recommend India as a tourist destination.

The World Cup attracted a record 1.25 million spectators, with nearly 75% experiencing an ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in person for the first time. Media coverage generated USD 70.7 million in value for businesses and stakeholders, further enhancing the tournament’s economic impact.

Moreover, the event led to the creation of over 48,000 jobs, particularly in the hospitality and event management sectors, generating an additional USD 18 million for India’s economy. The overall economic impact across India, excluding the specific host cities, was valued at USD 253.9 million.

 

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice acknowledged the event’s vast economic influence, stating, “The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket, generating USD 1.39 billion for India. The event created thousands of jobs and highlighted India as a top tourist destination.”

The success of the tournament is expected to have long-lasting benefits, as 59% of international attendees expressed interest in returning to India. The World Cup showcased India’s ability to host major global sporting events, cementing its status as a leading destination for international sports and boosting its economic profile.
