India captain Shubman Gill has made one of the biggest gains in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings, climbing three places to second and now sitting just 24 rating points behind New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell. The rise comes on the back of a productive home series against Afghanistan, where Gill scored 84 and 154 in the first two ODIs before sitting out the final match, which India won by nine wickets.

India also enjoyed several other movements in the ODI batting charts. Ishan Kishan jumped 21 spots to reach joint 43rd, while Yashasvi Jaiswal surged 84 places to 71st after his strong showing against Afghanistan. Virat Kohli slipped to third in the updated list after missing the series because of a hamstring injury, while Rohit Sharma stayed fourth.
Shreyas Iyer moved up to 14th, and KL Rahul slipped to 11th, showing how competitive the top order remains for India in the 50-over format. India’s bowlers also benefited from the Afghanistan series.

Arshdeep Singh climbed 16 places to 22nd after taking five wickets, Prasidh Krishna made a big leap from 92nd to joint 58th following his five-wicket haul in the final ODI, and Washington Sundar moved up 17 positions to joint 71st. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi also rose four places to 52nd in the batting rankings.

There was major movement in Test cricket as well. England’s Joe Root returned to the top of the Test batting rankings for the 12th time after scores of 46 and 77 in the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. New Zealand seamer Matt Henry matched India’s Jasprit Bumrah at the top of the Test bowling rankings after his match haul of 11 for 109, finishing on 870 rating points.

Henry’s rise has historical weight for New Zealand too. The ICC noted that he became only the third New Zealand bowler to reach the No. 1 spot in Test bowling, joining Jack Cowie and Richard Hadlee, and breaking a 36-year drought for the Black Caps in that category. New Zealand’s successful series-levelling win at The Oval powered that change at the top.
