Both England and Australia have faced penalties in the World Test Championship (WTC) due to their slow over-rate during the Ashes 2023 series. According to the revised regulations by the International Cricket Council (ICC), players from both teams were fined 5 percent of their match fee, and crucial WTC points were deducted for every over they fell short.

As a result of the penalties, England slipped below West Indies in the WTC points table, now occupying the 5th spot. Despite drawing the Ashes series 2-2, Australia retained the Urn, while England managed to secure a thrilling 49-run victory in the final Test at The Oval.

Australia lost 10 WTC points for their slow over-rate in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, while England lost a combined 19 points for falling short in four out of the five Tests. Under the WTC rules, teams are required to bowl 90 overs per day. A Test win earns 12 points, a draw gets four points, and there are no points for a loss.

England fell two overs short in the first Test at Edgbaston, nine in the second Test at Lord’s, three in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, and five in the final Test at The Oval. Australia faced a 50 percent fine of their match fee for being 10 overs short in Manchester (fourth Test).

The penalties are a reminder to both teams to adhere to the regulations and maintain the required over-rate during Test matches, as the World Test Championship is a crucial competition for teams aiming to claim the top spot in the Test cricket rankings.
