India and West Indies have both been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining slow over rates during the third and final ODI of their series in New Chandigarh. The ICC confirmed the sanctions on Monday, October 5, after both teams were found short of their required over rates.

India were four overs behind the required rate after accounting for time allowances, while West Indies were two overs short during the match at the PCA International Cricket Stadium, Ground A. As a result, India were fined 20 per cent of their match fee, while West Indies received a 10 per cent penalty.

According to the ICC, both captains accepted the charges and the proposed sanctions, meaning no formal hearings were required. Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the penalties.

The charges were brought by the match officials, including on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Virender Sharma.

The disciplinary action came after a high-scoring third ODI, in which India were asked to bat first after West Indies won the toss. Captain Shubman Gill’s side posted 351/7 in their allotted 50 overs, with KL Rahul producing an unbeaten 129 and Rohit Sharma contributing a crucial 92.

Despite India’s imposing total, West Indies produced a remarkable run chase. Captain Shai Hope led the response with a sensational 162 off 143 balls, guiding his team to 352/5 in just 48.2 overs.

Amir Jangoo also made a valuable contribution with a half-century, while Keemo Paul added a brisk 40-plus score to keep the chase on track. West Indies eventually secured a five-wicket victory, finishing the ODI series on a strong note.

Shai Hope will captain the West Indies side in the T20I series, with eight additional players joining the squad specifically for the five-match assignment in India.
