India broke their ICC trophy drought with a resounding victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa in Bridgetown. Prior to this win, India had last clinched an ICC title in 2013, enduring several near misses in subsequent tournaments. Leading the charge was Rohit Sharma, who guided India to victory in his third successive ICC final as captain, finally securing the elusive title.
Following the final, the ICC unveiled its team of the tournament, prominently featuring six Indian players. Rohit Sharma was an automatic choice as opener alongside the in-form Afghan batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
Rohit Sharma’s stellar performance throughout the tournament saw him score 257 runs at an impressive average of 36.71 and a striking rate of 156.7, including three half-centuries. Gurbaz contributed significantly with 281 runs at an average of 35.12 and a strike rate of 124.33, also notching up three fifties.

Nicholas Pooran occupied the number three position in the ICC team, followed by India’s Suryakumar Yadav and Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis. Hardik Pandya, who silenced his critics with his all-round display, secured the sixth spot, while Axar Patel was placed at number seven.
The bowling attack featured Rashid Khan, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and the Afghan duo of Fazalhaq Farooqi and Anrich Nortje as the 12th man. In the final showdown, defending a target of 177 runs, India successfully restricted South Africa to 169/8 in their allotted 20 overs, clinching victory by seven runs.

Hardik Pandya starred with the ball, claiming three crucial wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh supported with figures of 2/18 and 2/20 respectively. Earlier, Virat Kohli’s impressive knock of 76 runs off 59 balls propelled India to a competitive total of 176/7 in their 20 overs.
