Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta said only performances should dictate veteran India batter Rohit Sharma’s place in the side for the 2027 ODI World Cup as well. A lot of talk has been going on over the past few months about Rohit’s future and his chances of playing in the marquee event. During the ODI series in England in July, several reports even suggested that he could bid farewell to international cricket after the final ODI at Lord’s as well.

Talking about Rohit Sharma’s place in the Indian ODI side, Dasgupta said on his YouTube channel, Deep Point: “What the BCCI secretary said is the right direction. Just keep any x player in Rohit’s place and think of how his place in the side will get decided. If he is performing, he’ll stay in the side. You can’t take a call before every series. Retirement is completely his call. But otherwise, if he’s performing, it’s a straightforward call. Selection has to be performance-based.”

Deep Dasgupta also said that India must provide Yashasvi Jaiswal enough game time before the 2027 ODI World Cup, even if Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are the designated openers as well. On the other hand, Jaiswal has done well in his limited opportunities in the 50-over format for India, averaging over 71 with two tons in six matches as well.

“The next question is how you manage someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has scored two centuries in his last three innings. You also have to give him some game time before the World Cup. It’s important to remember that as well and see if Shubman Gill can play at No.3 in some match so that all three of Rohit, Jaiswal, and Gill play. Gametime for Jaiswal will be important so that if needed in the World Cup, he’s ready to go. It shouldn’t feel sudden if he has to play in the World Cup a month before,” Deep Dasgupta concluded.
