Ashen Bandara and Jeffrey Vandersay were seen involved in a horrific collision in the third ODI of the three-match ODI series on Sunday, January 15 at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram as well. In the penultimate ball of the 43rd over in the Indian innings, Virat Kohli pulled Chamika Karunaratne for a boundary through the square leg region when Vandersay and Bandara both came in to save the ball, but instead collided with each other.

Bandara ran to his left from the backward square leg whereas Vandersay ran to his right from deep midwicket. Bandara pulled out a dive to stop the ball from going to the boundary but it went to the boundary. Vandersay tumbled over Bandara and they both fell flat on the ground. It looked like Bandara’s knee crashed into Vandersay’s tummy. And, on an immediate basis, the Sri Lankan physiotherapist came out to the field to check on the well-being of the two players as well. Soon, the Indian medical staff also came out and stretchers came out and Bandara had to be carried off as well.

However, Vandersay was back on his feet, but had to go off the field. Dhananjaya de Silva and Dunith Wellalage came in as substitutes. And, Virat Kohli had to wait a bit on 99 before getting to his hundred on the last ball of the over as well. Moreover, the play was halted for quite some time after the two Sri Lankan cricketers were seen in pain. Bandara was one of the additions of the Sri Lankan playing XI after the visitors rested de Silva and Wellalage for the series as well.
