During the final of Singer-Akai Nidahas Trophy in 1998 at Colombo, India defeated Sri Lanka by 6 runs in what was considered as a high-scoring match in those times. Having won the toss, Mohammad Azharuddin, the then Indian captain, had elected to bat first.

His decision was well-supported by the opening pair of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar, who went on to score their fourth and 17th ODI centuries respectively. The duo shared a 252-run partnership, which was broken in the 44th over when Tendulkar was stumped by Romesh Kaluwitharana off Sanath Jayasuriya.

He scored 128 (131) with the help of eight fours and two sixes. On the first ball of the next over, Ganguly was dismissed caught and bowled by Muralitharan. He ended up scoring 109 (136) with the help of six fours and two sixes. India scored 307-6 in 50 overs. With bowling figures of 9-0-42-2, Jayasuriya was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts.

On the back of Aravinda de Silva’s 11th and last ODI century, 105 (94), including 10 fours, Sri Lanka scored 301-10 in 49.3 overs. Ajit Agarkar was the highest wicket-taker for India as he picked up 10-0-53-4.
