The no.1 Test ranking team India thrashed the new Test team Afghanistan just under the second day of the one-off Test match at Bengaluru. In that historic encounter, India won by an innings and 262 runs.

On the day 1, Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and decided to field first. India scored 474 runs at the end of the first innings.

In reply, Afghanistan was bowled out for just 109 runs in their maiden Test innings history. India forced them to follow-on where the new Test team was again bundled out for just 103 runs.

Here are some of the statistical highlights of the match:

  • Afghanistan became the 12th Test members.
  • Shikhar Dhawan completed his century before the lunch break on day 1. First Indian batsman to score a hundred before the lunch break on day 1 of a Test match. Previous best by an Indian batsman was 99* by Virender Sehwag against West Indies at Gros Islet in 2006.
  • At the age of just 17 years and 78 days, Afghanistan off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman became the second youngest bowler to take a Test wicket on the Indian soil. The record holder is Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla who achieved this feat at the age of just 17 years and 75 days (against England at Mohali in 2006).
  • Afghanistan’s 109-run is the second-lowest total for any team in their maiden Test innings. The lowest one is just 84 by South Africa (against England at Port Elizabeth in 1889).
  • Umesh Yadav (103 wickets) became the 22nd Indian bowler to claim 100 or more Test wickets. Moreover, Yadav is the eight Indian pacers to claim 100 or more Test wickets.
  • Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (316 wickets) became the fourth most Test wicket-takers for India. The top three in this list is Anil Kumble (619 wickets), Kapil Dev (434 wickets) and Harbhajan Singh (417 wickets).
  • Afghanistan scored a total of 212 runs in this Test. It is the lowest total score for a team in their debutant Test match. The previous lowest was 213 by South Africa (against England at Port Elizabeth in 1889).
  • On the day 2, Afghanistan was bowled out completely for twice. It was only the fourth instances in Test cricket history where a team has been bowled out completely for twice in a day.

  • Total 24 wickets fell on the day 2. Joint third most wickets fell on a day in Test cricket history.

  • It was the 21st time when a Test finished under day 2. Among those, it was the first time where India has involved.
