The road to the 2027 ODI World Cup has already begun, with every bilateral series offering teams an opportunity to strengthen their combinations and address weaknesses. For West Indies, the stakes are even higher as they prepare to go through the World Cup Qualifier for the third consecutive time in their bid to reach the ICC event. India have played three ODI series in 2026, losing two of them. Their preparations have been affected by injuries and their focus on the T20 World Cup, which they won earlier this year.

India will also miss key players Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming series. While neither is currently part of the ODI squad, India will hope both are fit enough to feature in the 2027 World Cup campaign in Southern Africa. The absence of Hardik leaves India without their preferred balance in the XI, while Bumrah’s experience and quality create another significant gap in the bowling attack.

Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has only recently returned to full fitness, could be required to shoulder a heavier workload with the ball. That could give West Indies an opportunity to put pressure on India’s bowling unit. West Indies have not won a bilateral ODI series against India since 2006 and have not done so in India since 2002. Their bowling attack, however, offers plenty of variety, with Matthew Forde and Jayden Seales providing swing and seam, Alzarri Joseph adding a middle-overs threat and Vitel Lawes offering an X-factor.

Shai Hope remains a key figure in their batting lineup. For Virat Kohli, the series could bring another major milestone. He is just 59 runs away from 15,000 ODI runs and averages 66.50 against West Indies. In six ODIs in 2026, Kohli has struck at 106.66, only the second time in his career he has recorded an ODI strike rate above 100 for a calendar year.

The first ODI will be played at Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, a venue where seamers have historically enjoyed favourable conditions. With minimal rain threat forecast, the stage is set for an important World Cup preparation series.

India

India captain Shubman Gill has been cleared to play after recovering from the elbow blow he suffered during a net session. However, India face a selection challenge with several first-choice players currently involved with the T20I side at the Asian Games, including Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel.

If India are confident of getting 10 overs from Nitish Kumar Reddy, they could opt for a batting-heavy combination and hand Naman Dhir his ODI debut in the middle order. Alternatively, India could strengthen their bowling cover by selecting Gurnoor Brar or giving Auqib Nabi his international debut.

West Indies

West Indies will welcome John Campbell back at the top of the order after his recovery from surgery. Justin Greaves replaced him in two of the five ODIs against New Zealand in July and could open alongside him in Thiruvananthapuram. Shamar Joseph is another selection option, although his ODI workload remains limited since his debut in 2024.
