The demands of modern cricket scheduling have once again come into focus as India prepares to begin its five-match T20I series against West Indies. The situation brings back memories of Virat Kohli’s famous comments in 2020, when India faced a tight turnaround between an ODI against Australia and a T20I in New Zealand. Shreyas Iyer’s current T20I side is facing a similar challenge. Just three days after winning the Asian Games gold medal in Nisshin, India will begin the five-match series against West Indies at home.

The schedule remains demanding, with India set to travel to Christchurch to face New Zealand just five days after the West Indies series concludes in Bengaluru. The short gap between matches leaves little room for recovery, but India enters the series with plenty of confidence. The Asian Games triumph extended the team’s winning streak in completed T20I matches to nine. As the reigning world champions, India will be keen to maintain that momentum against a competitive West Indies side.

New Zealand could offer a tougher challenge later in the schedule, particularly after India’s disappointing UK tour. However, West Indies have also shown that they can trouble India in T20 cricket. While much of India’s World Cup-winning core remains intact, consistency from individual players will remain important. India will also want to improve its fielding after committing 14 misfields across the Asian Games semi-final and final.

West Indies, meanwhile, have struggled with consistency but possess enough match-winners to challenge any side. They recently defeated Sri Lanka in a T20I series and had a respectable World Cup campaign before India knocked them out in Kolkata. A strong showing in India could help restore their reputation as one of T20 cricket’s leading teams.

The Ekana Stadium pitch in Lucknow will also be closely watched. The surface was bowler-friendly during the first half of IPL 2026, offering movement and bounce to pacers before becoming flatter later in the tournament. With rain possible before the game, some early assistance for seamers could be on offer.

India’s decision to include an extra batter in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi instead of Arshdeep Singh worked perfectly on the slower Nisshin pitches, where stroke-making was difficult. However, India are expected to return to a more familiar combination at home, with Arshdeep likely to lead the pace attack in place of the rested Jasprit Bumrah.

Sanju Samson is also expected to retain his place at the top despite an underwhelming Asian Games campaign. His back-to-back fifties against Afghanistan should be enough to keep him in the XI. Kuldeep Yadav could replace Ravi Bishnoi as India’s main wrist-spinner after Bishnoi struggled in the Asian Games final against Pakistan.

One of Prince Yadav or Mayank Yadav could join Arshdeep in the pace attack, while Nitish Kumar Reddy is also in contention for a place in the playing XI.

Probable XI: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav/Mayank Yadav

West Indies have strengthened their squad with the arrival of Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, Rovman Powell and Akeal Hosein. Uncapped opener Kamil Pooran, who impressed in the CPL with a strike rate close to 160, is expected to open.

With Jason Holder rested, Keemo Paul could replace him. West Indies may also consider starting with pace at both ends after Abhishek Sharma and Samson troubled Afghanistan’s spinners. However, Akeal Hosein remains a strong option, having dismissed Abhishek twice in T20 cricket and possessing the ability to strike with the new ball.

Probable XI: Kamil Pooran, Shai Hope (c & wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Roston Chase, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Keemo Paul, Romario Shepherd, Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph
