The second wave of the COVID-19 virus has caused mayhem in India and impacted many families. While lakhs of new cases were registered daily, a lot of people have lost their lives to the deadly virus. Veteran Indian journalist Ruchir Mishra was also among many who lost their lives due to COVID-19 complications. Mishra breathed his last on May 4 in Nagpur. Following his demise, many Indian cricketers have come forward to help his family.

Mishra, 42, was associated with The Times of India in Nagpur for over a decade and he had covered many domestic matches and was even popular among many cricketers. Hence, the likes of Wasim Jaffer and Umesh Yadav paid heartfelt condolences to his family after coming across the sad news.

In order to help the journalist’s family in these challenging times, a group of Ruchir’s schoolmates initiated a fundraiser. The untimely demise of the journalist meant his wife and two children are left behind. Although the loss is irreparable, the fundraiser will provide financial help in their journey ahead.

As per the fundraising website, many notable cricket stars have also made generous donations. As per the website, veteran fast bowler Umesh Yadav has donated one lakh INR, while his teammate Cheteshwar Pujara contributed INR 50,000. India women’s team coach Ramesh Powar also came forward and donated NR 50,000. Star Ravichandran Ashwin also made his contribution, and he even urged his fans to help Ruchir’s family.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic also grappled with the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The gala T20 tournament was suspended midway after multiple cricketers and staff members getting infected with the virus despite the bio-bubble in place. Hence, on May 4, BCCI postponed the remaining season indefinitely.

Only 29 of the 60 scheduled games took place till the season suspension, and hence, BCCI now has a job in hand. The board needs to find a window in the jam-packed cricket calendar to find a closure to the season. As per reports, BCCI is currently planning to hold the remaining matches in England in September.
