Questions are being raised over whether the growing emphasis on athletic physiques and strict fitness standards is pushing some Indian cricketers towards weight-loss medications. A recent report has claimed that a number of cricketers, including players associated with the IPL, are using GLP-1 medicines such as Ozempic and Mounjaro to achieve a leaner appearance.

According to Cricblogger, the reported trend is not limited to established players, with younger cricketers also allegedly exploring these medications amid increasing fitness expectations in Indian cricket.

Virat Kohli’s remarkable physical transformation has long been regarded as an example of how discipline, nutrition, and consistent training can change an athlete’s career. However, achieving such results naturally requires considerable time and commitment, prompting concerns that some players may instead be looking for quicker alternatives.

A source quoted by the publication described GLP-1 medication as a shortcut to weight loss alongside regular workouts, while claiming that its use has extended beyond cricket to other sections of the entertainment industry.

GLP-1-based medicines are primarily prescribed for medical conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and, depending on the specific drug and medical circumstances, can also be used for weight management. Ozempic contains semaglutide, while Mounjaro contains tirzepatide. Both are prescription medicines administered by injection and can influence appetite, blood sugar regulation, and body weight.

However, these medicines are not without potential risks or side effects. Reported side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation, among others. Their use should therefore be based on medical advice rather than appearance or performance-related pressure.

The reported development comes at a time when Indian cricket is already dealing with a significant injury burden. Several prominent players are currently undergoing rehabilitation, creating additional challenges for the team management and the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Nitish Reddy, Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, Washington Sundar, and Sai Sudharsan are among the Indian players who have faced fitness concerns recently.

While the reported use of GLP-1 medications among cricketers requires proper verification, the issue highlights the increasing pressure athletes face to maintain specific body compositions. For professional cricketers, sustainable fitness, performance, and long-term health should remain more important than simply achieving a particular physical appearance.
