A revamped coaching staff for the Indian cricket team was declared on Friday by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, under the head coach, Gautam Gambhir. Under the fresh vision Gambhir had envisioned from the very beginning, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate will be the first two confirmed members in his backroom team. The T Dilip-led fielding coach will continue; an announcement will likely follow soon.
The search for a new bowling coach continues as Morne Morkel has now emerged as the frontrunner. It is understood that Morkel’s experience of working alongside Gambhir at the Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants franchises weighed in when the former India opener recommended him to the BCCI.
Nayar and Gambhir will travel together with the Indian squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. However, ten Doeschate’s arrival might be delayed due to his ongoing commitments with the LA Knight Riders in Major League Cricket. His integration is likely to happen at some point during the ODI series.

The team is likely to depart for Sri Lanka on July 22, and hence the press conference could take place before the charter flight leaves from Mumbai. That could be the time when chief selector Aakash Chopra officially introduces Gambhir in his new role and announces the rest of the coaching staff.

The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, is already in Colombo to attend the annual conference of the International Cricket Council. He can use this opportunity to meet up with the players, including the newly-appointed T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav.
This reorganization in the coaching staff ushers in a new era for Indian cricket. Gambhir’s influence in shaping the team’s future with trusted allies like Nayar and ten Doeschate is a story waiting to unfold. The upcoming tour of Sri Lanka will be the first look at what this remade coaching team can do and how it will work.
